The Dinosaur Game was introduced in 2014 by Chrome designers Sebastien Gabriel, Alan Bettes, and Edward Jung. It was created as a fun offline feature for Google Chrome browsers. When a user’s device loses connection to the internet, instead of showing a plain error page, Chrome displays a small pixelated Tyrannosaurus rex. Pressing the spacebar begins the game, which features the dinosaur running endlessly across a desert landscape.
The design team wanted something lighthearted to balance the annoyance of losing internet access. The idea of a dinosaur—a creature from a prehistoric world without wifi—became the perfect symbol. The game’s official name during development was “Project Bolan,” referencing Marc Bolan, frontman of the glam rock band T. Rex.
