Kenya coffee possesses a relatively unique history compared to its East African neighbors. While Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and Yemen cultivated it for centuries, coffee trees were not introduced to Kenya until the late 19th century. British colonists and French Holy Ghost Fathers brought Arabica coffee plants to the region around the 1890s, establishing initial plantations near Nairobi and Kiambu. Over the subsequent decades, strict colonial oversight dictated who could grow coffee, initially restricting indigenous Kenyans from farming the crop. It wasn't until the mid-20th century, particularly following the Mau Mau rebellion and subsequent land reforms, that native smallholder farmers gained the right to cultivate their own crops. Today, Kenya coffee stands as a monumental success story driven largely by smallholder cooperatives rather than massive corporate estates.
